A Little Bit About Truffle Salt

Truffles are small, powdery white mushrooms that are enjoyed mainly for their unique taste. But they also have another quality that makes them unique, their contribution to the world's culinary heritage. A truffle is actually the fruiting stem of a tiny subterranean fungus, primarily one of the three species of the genus Ascomycota. Although the name "truffle" comes from the Latin trus, meaning "foot-cap", the cap is actually a protective cover called the "mycosis". In addition to the ascomycetes, other genera of fungus are also classified as truffles, including Geopora, Peziza, Choiromyces, Leucangium, and more than a hundred others.

Traditionally, the fungus was used to cure ailments like diabetes, indigestion, food poisoning, toothache, mouth ulcers, and many others. To this day, though, truffles are eaten just for their delicious flavor. Most people like to eat truffles with a little bit of butter and cream on the top, with some champagne or wine added for a nice aftertaste. Some people, however, like to sprinkle the tops of truffles with a little nutmeg and cinnamon to get a similar flavor, or even sprinkle some sugar or lemon juice over the tops. No matter what you do, though, the best way to enjoy truffles is to eat them straight out of their box.

All good quality black truffle salt has gone through a curing process that seals in the flavor inside the shell. Most often this involves smoking the salt inside a wooden container for several hours or even overnight. After this time has passed, the salt will be completely dry. The finishing touch of this step is that sometimes the wood will be treated with iodine to help preserve the aroma and flavor of the salt.

When choosing a salt for a particular dish, you have two choices, table salt or sea salt. Each has its own distinct features and can even vary according to where it is harvested from. For instance, while sea salt is harvested in the ocean, table salt is generally harvested from brine pools located near the shore. Because it is harvested in a different environment, each salt will come across as having its own distinctive smell.

So, which one should you use for cooking? If you want your dish to come out tasty and have a very unique flavor, then it would be best to use the organic brand. It also works well for desserts, salty crackers, and fried foods. However, if you are looking for a very rich flavor, then the organic brand is what you should use. Just remember to use a small amount of it, since a large amount will overwhelm the dish. Another great idea for using truffle salt in your cooking is to make a flavored oil that you can use on delicate food.

For example, instead of using butter for frying, you can add a pinch of truffle salt to your batter. You can then make your scrambled eggs just like you normally do, with just a tiny drop of oil in the mixture. You could also bake your popcorn and then drizzle it over with the oil. This will really add a special flavor to your summer snacks.

If you are a true salt lover, then you are probably already using a little bit of it in your recipes. However, if you feel like your dishes lack that special flavor, then you can buy organic white truffle salt instead. It has a very mild flavor and comes in handy when you are mixing ingredients or working with a cream sauce. It is also a great addition to coffee recipes, especially if you have a dark roast. The great thing about this seasoning is that it won't alter the color of your coffee in any way. It's perfect to use on eggs as well, simply mix it in after the egg has been cooked to scramble perfection.

Even though truffle salt is mostly known for being used for cooking, it is also a great seasoning to use on just about anything. If you are a true salt lover, then you should definitely consider buying some organic brands of it and sprinkle it on just about anything. You'll never know exactly how much of it you are adding until you actually use it. As long as you avoid adding too much to your dishes, you'll get a wonderful blend of truffle flavor that you can enjoy for years to come.
