Mercaptans are a by-product of the oil refinery process. It is a naturally occurring chemical in the crude oil, and it is most noticeable at high concentrations in an oxidized medium. The main difference between mercaptans and butyric acid is that mercaptans are toxic at low concentrations, but they make up for it with their ability to cause damage at higher concentrations (e.g. carcinogenic compounds).
